The remote island of Molokai lies to the east of Oahu across the Kaiwi Channel. It's a more laid back pace of life here, and that's just the way the locals like it. The central port town of Kaunakakai is located on Molokai's south shore and was once King Kamehameha's summer getaway. It's home to the island's main harbor and is the longest wharf in Hawaii. Here, tugboats and barges unload goods for the island, and visitors can hire charter boats for fishing, whale watching, and snorkeling.You won't find traffic lights or big box chain stores, but there is an old fashioned main street. Ala Malama Avenue has plenty of charm and lots of delightful mom and pop stores that carry everything you need. Don't be surprised to find people lined up after hours outside 80 year old Kanemitsu's Bakery. This local eatery serves fresh hot bread right out of the oven. A particular favorite is the onion and cheese bread - split open and slathered with butter or cream cheese.
Molokai's natural, untamed beauty includes Hawaii's tallest waterfall and some of the world's highest sea cliffs. It's no surprise that kayaking, hiking, and cycling are a favorite pastime here. Kaunakakai is just 15 minutes southeast of Molokai Airport, making it easy to island hop whenever you have the urge.
