Kailua is place of natural beauty. Its name in the Hawaiian language means “two seas†or “two currents†for the two lagoons which traverse Kailua Bay. This beach community is located on the windward coast of Oahu and is blessed with constant offshore trade winds. As a result, it’s one of the most celebrated windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations in the world.
The spectacular Koolau Mountains form the backdrop for Kailua Beach, considered by many to be the best beach in Hawaii. With nearly three miles of soft, light sand and soft breaking waves, it’s a favorite amongst swimmers, kayakers, and boogie boarders.
Kailua also attracts serious adventure seekers. Mount Olomana is a set of three dramatic mountain peaks with a steep, rugged hiking trail passable in many areas only with the aid of ropes. Two islets, known as Na Mokulua, are located less than a mile from Lanikai Beach. The waters around these islands are loaded with tiger sharks but that doesn’t keep the locals from spearfishing here. They also love to surf the breaks.
While many Kailuans work in downtown Honolulu, they don’t mind the 30 minute commute via the Pali Highway (Route 61) for the chance to come home to their beautiful Kailua at the end of a long day.
